All three of these are well worth playing in 2020:
Factorio
An
addictive factory-building/puzzle-solving game whose scope, depth, and
technical wizardry will astound and amaze you for hours on end. It’s
currently the third most-played game in a Steam library at 258 hours
played.
Subnautica
The
very best survival game ever played. Has a really good story and a
memorable setting (beautiful, too), a fun gameplay loop and it knows
how to pique your curiosity. If you have a fear of deep oceans and big
things living in the depths that want to eat you, you may want to steer
clear.
Kenshi
Currently my most-played
game at 280 hours. It has no story beyond what happens to the player
while going about their business, and is instead all about guiding your
avatar through the world and doing whatever you want to.
In
it, you must find companions to add to your growing tribe, and then do
the work needed to establish bases, grow food, learn skills, make
weapons and armour, improve your combat skills, and more. Once you’re
sufficiently established you must then venture into the world looking
for the resources needed to improve and expand your base(s) through
research.
This
doesn’t sound all that compelling, admittedly, but it drew me in quite
easily and it could do that to you, too. Ask my girlfriend about
Christmas 2018, and she’ll roll her eyes and tell you all about how she
was a “Kenshi widow” in that time because it was literally all I wanted
to do.
There are plenty of other PC games worth playing in 2020, but these three are at the top of the list of personal recommendations.
If you try only one, try Factorio - it’s incredible. There’s even a demo!
